Russell pips Verstappen to pole in Canada

Mercedes’ George Russell snatched pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Russell beat Verstappen by 0.160 seconds to grab the fastest time just seconds after the Dutchman himself had taken it away from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. The Australian’s team-mate and title rival Lando Norris could manage only seventh place, behind Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and a superb performance from Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin.

Sam Burns leads as McIlroy makes cut at US Open

America’s Sam Burns hit a sensational five-under 65 to seize the lead on three under on an attritional second day at the US Open. Only three players out of a field of 156 are under par at the halfway stage with Burns making six birdies and just one bogey in a morning round that looked better as the day progressed. The world’s top two players Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy were among those battling to make the weekend and both did enough to make the cut.

JJ Spaun leads by one after opening round at US Open

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy – the world’s top two – found Oakmont Country Club a bruising challenge on a first day at the US Open when only 10 of the 156 players ended under par. Masters champion McIlroy had started well and was two under after nine holes, but then unravelled with four bogeys and a double bogey as he posted a four-over 74. Out in front on four under is JJ Spaun, who McIlroy beat in a play-off to win The Players Championship in March.

Tottenham appoint Thomas Frank as new manager

Tottenham have appointed Brentford boss Thomas Frank as their head coach on a deal until 2028. The 51-year-old Dane replaces Ange Postecoglou, who was sacked earlier this month despite leading Spurs to victory in the Europa League final in May. Frank spent seven years in charge of Brentford, guiding the club from the Championship to the Premier League in 2021.

Manchester City sign Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders for an initial fee of £46.5m on a five-year contract. The Netherlands international is Pep Guardiola’s fourth summer signing with Rayan Ait-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli and Rayan Cherki having also joined. Reijnders, 26, was signed in time to be eligible for this month’s Club World Cup in America
