Verstappen storms to victory at Imola ahead of McLaren duo

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took a dominant victory in the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix founded on an audacious overtaking move on the first lap. The four-time champion passed pole-sitter Oscar Piastri’s McLaren around the outside of the first chicane after the start and controlled the race from there. A late safety car closed the field up and put the McLarens of Piastri and Lando Norris on Verstappen’s tail. But a consummate restart from Verstappen allowed him to break free while Norris fought for three laps before finally passing his teammate to take second.

Scheffler surges into lead ahead of final round of PGA Championship

World number one Scottie Scheffler stormed into the lead of the US PGA Championship and will take a three-shot advantage into Sunday’s final round at Quail Hollow. The 28-year-old carded a superb round of 65 – playing his final five holes in five under – to end the day on 11 under par for the tournament. In both 2022 and 2024, Scheffler converted 54-hole leads into victories at the Masters and is in prime position to seal his third major win.

Luke Plapp powers to stage eight win as Ulissi moves into pink- Giro d’Italia

Luke Plapp won his first Grand Tour stage with a dominant solo win on Stage 8 at the Giro d’Italia, while Diego Ulissi grabbed the leader’s pink jersey as Primoz Roglic and his Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe colleagues chose to let it go. Plapp comfortably proved the strongest from the day’s breakaway, with 2023 champion Roglic and the GC big hitters coming in over four minutes down.

Crystal Palace stun Manchester City to win FA Cup

Crystal Palace won the first major trophy in the club’s history with victory against Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley. Eberechi Eze was Palace’s hero when he crowned a superb counter-attack by sweeping home Daniel Munoz’s cross after 16 minutes. City, meanwhile, endured a day of total frustration as they failed to win a trophy in a season for the first time since manager Pep Guardiola’s first campaign in charge in 2016-17.

Piastri pips Verstappen to pole at Imola Quali

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri beat Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to pole position at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in a qualifying session that featured an enormous accident for Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda. Piastri edged Verstappen by 0.034 seconds despite encountering traffic in the final two corners and failing to improve his time in the final sector. Both Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris fell short on their final laps, and the Briton was demoted to fourth by Mercedes’ George Russell.
